Verbena hastata, Blue Vervain
Verbena hastata, Blue Vervain in the golden hour of sunset |
Blue Vervain, also known as Swamp Vervain, is highly tolerant of wetland soils, but don't let that stop you from planting this wonderful summer bloomer in your garden -it will do fine there too! But you can plant it in a rain garden or wetland edge planting, where it will do exceedingly well. Consider making an incidental rain garden where the gutter downspout dumps rainwater onto the sunny lawn (killing the grass) -a great spot for Blue Vervain.
Don't confuse Verbena hastata with Verbena stricta, its dry-land cousin!
Bloom: blue-purple, July into September
Height: 3 to 5 feet
