Symphyotrichum cordifolium, Blue Wood Aster (Heartleaf Aster)

Blue Wood Aster growing at the woodland edge.

Blue Wood Aster is one of the ubiquitous asters of woods edges and openings in eastern Minnesota. You may not notice it until it is in its late summer, early fall, profuse bloom. Perfect for your woodland wildflower garden, woodland renovation. Not suitable for a formal garden or near untreated lawns as it will self-seed without prejudice. That said, I have it everywhere and look forward to it every fall. Excellent with White Snakeroot and Tall Thimbleweed.

Blooms: pale blue-lavender to white, August into October

Height: 24 to 42 inches

Conditions: pt shade to pt sun, dappled shade, medium to medium-dry soils
