Trillium grandiflorum, Large-flowered Trillium

Trillium, an ephemeral plant of high-quality, rich woodlands.

Large-flowered Trillium is one of the handful of Trillium species in Minnesota, mainly found in the eastern and northern county woodlands. As an ephemeral species of woodlands, Trillium receives some sun as the trees leaf out, but then benefits from shade, cooler soil, and moisture of the woods as the season heats upI recommend Trillium for savanna site type only with richer soils and adequate shade. In a common garden setting, try to match a rich-soil woodland setting, do not plant where tree roots are dense. Mark your planting location to avoid plunking another plant when this ephemeral goes dormant.
