Lythrum alatum, Winged Loosestrife

Winged Loosestrife flowers

Winged Loosestrife is Minnesota's native wetland loosestrife with a stature and purple flower density much different enough from the invasive Purple Loosestrife. Do not confuse with this species with Decodon verticillatus, Swamp Loosestrife either -a fairly rare magenta-purple flowered water's edge plant found in a few east-central counties centered around Anoka county.

Lythrum alatum could work in your rain garden, at the edge of a pond, or within a sunny wetland restoration.

Blooms: magenta-purple, July into August

Height: 2 to 4 feet

Conditions: sun to part shade, wet to moist-medium
