Lythrum alatum, Winged Loosestrife

Winged Loosestrife flowers

Lythrum alatum is Minnesota's native wetland Loosestrife with purple flowers. It comes with a stature and flower density much different from that other Loosestrife -invasive Purple Loosestrife. Also, do not confuse this species with Decodon verticillatus, aka Swamp Loosestrife, either -a fairly rare magenta-purple flowered water's edge plant found in a few east-central MN counties centered around the Anoka Sand Plain.

Lythrum alatum is a lovely addition to your rain garden, at the edge of a pond or creek, or within a wetland restoration.

Blooms: magenta-purple, July into August
Height: 1 to 4 feet
Conditions: sun to part shade, wet to moist-medium
