Claytonia virginica, Virginia Spring Beauty

Spring Beauty with early pollinator

Spring Beauty is an ephemeral plant of wooded floodplains and moist upland woods across the eastern counties of Minnesota. As woodland ephemeral plants go, it may be one of the least demanding. Spring Beauty grows well with several ephemerals like Dutchman's Breeches, Ramps, and Hepatica. It occupies similar habitat to the much taller, but much later season Wild Golden Glow, Bottlebrush Grass, and more. It is also notable for having pink pollen -an unusual trait.

Blooms: pinkish white with magenta-purple stripes, April into May

Height: 4 to 6 inches

Conditions: pt shade (may be shade at leaf out), moist-medium soils
