Bouteloua curtipendula, Side-Oats Grama

Side Oats brilliant orange flowers are extravagant as grass flowers go.

Side Oats Grama is a clump forming, warm season grass offering brilliant orange-red florets midsummer and then the visual texture of a mass of oat-like seeds. It's blades are a blue-gray-green. It is a wonderful grass that does well on hot, sunny sites with well-draining soils or slopes. It gets full and can do its part to help stabilize a sunny slope. Easily reseeds, easy to grow, and nothing bothers it. I do not recommend it for short-grass prairie gardens -for that I recommend its cousin, Blue Grama.

Bloom: orange, July into August

Height: 24 to 32 inches

Conditions: sun to pt sun, medium to dry soils, well-draining

Side Oats seeds in the morning sun.
