Asarum canadense, North American Ginger (Wild Ginger)
Asarum canadense, North American Ginger |
North American Wild Ginger is that rare plant that demands full shade while behaving as a ground cover. Now, I don't favor the idea, ground cover, but with patience, Wild Ginger will give you a good shot at covering bare woodland soil, even on slopes. But don't leave it alone -plant with Maidenhair Fern, Woodland Geranium, Zig Zag Goldenrod, Lady Fern, Jack-in-the-Pulpit and Big Leaf Aster.
Bloom: burgundy red, April to May
Height: 4 to 12 inches
Conditions: Shade, moist to medium, rich woodland soils
